Overwhelming Sadness

Mom was having one of her crying fits again. I honestly believe that’s when she is most aware of what’s going on around her. Like she remembers, for just a little while, what she used to be like. And she knows that how she is now is not it. Heartbreaking. She wanted to tell me something. But the words wouldn’t come. They were beyond her grasp. All I can think to tell her when she gets like this is that I love her and will always love her. And I hug her tight hoping those words of comfort can break through whatever sadness has her in its grip.
